Use of [-- SignedIn? --]

I have this call to a Javascript Function in my Shopping Cart:

updateOptionTables([-- SignedIn? --]);

When I refresh the cart and look at the source the browser has been sent this statement:

updateOptionTables( SignedIn? --]);

I get the browser warning:
