thanks

There are a couple of options to setup the way you calculate taxes for your online store.
The options and settings are located in ShopSite through Commerce> Tax>
1. If you select "tax by zip code" you can enter the tax percentage by state zip codes
2. You could sign up for AvaTax or TaxJar accounts and configure the integration so that they can calculate the appropriate taxes.
3. There is also the option to use an API Tax Add-on - ShopSite can be configured to use custom or third-party software API's to generate or retrieve tax information.

Here is the Help documentation for setting up taxes in your store.

Avalara will also have a seminar that may help on November 14:

I'm admittedly a little late to this party. Will ShopSite not handle the specifics of state taxes without an add-on? Meaning, if I just set it up to collect state taxes on orders going to states in which we meet economic nexus will it not be accurate?

In response to "country-wide sales tax". It is unlawful to collect a tax if you don't actually pass the collected tax along to the state. Big no no.

I guess the answer is it depends on the state and how complicated their tax boundaries and rates are. Some states have hundreds (thousands?) of rates. Now with the Supreme Court South Dakota ruling, there will be more states wanting to tax merchants with an "economic nexus" instead of a physical presence. So, as with most things tax-related it will only get more complicated.

If the states you have an economic nexus in have straight-forward tax zones/rates then you can use ShopSite's tax by zip to correctly calculate tax.

There are only a few states that collect a flat rate on sales tax. Most state collect a different rate for each town and or county and they change all the time. You are either going to have to use taxjar or equivalent or not collect the tax and risk an audit then have the pay all the tax you did not collect.

The other option is to collect the state sales tax even in those states with complicated city/county taxes. And then pay the difference ourselves when filing. That's our plan for now.
