BUGS v7.1.0? Cannot Change Product's Template / Copy Product

Postby Andy S. » Sun Jan 30, 2005 7:05 pm

Running V7.1.0 and these are not on the list of fixes in the two service
releases so maybe these are new.

BUG 1.
I had a product was set to use custom template A. I decided to change it to
custom template B, yet Shopsite STILL publishes and creates the more info
page from Template A. I then changed the template to the shopsite default
template and same thing, still publishing from custom template A. I then
logged into my server, manually deleted all pages, did a full regenerate.
Opened up the newly generated more info page and it was STILL from custom
template A. Shopsite added the following: meta name="generator"
content="ShopSite Pro 7.1.0 (data - template-a.txt)" . It is only happening
with one product on my list. I have not tested deleting the product and
recreating it, that will be next.

BUG 2
In many instances, using the copy product has resulted in the source product
being corrupted by the data in the destination product. After making the
required changes to product name and sku, I opened the destination product
and edited the price, description, more info file name and image names,
after publishing, the source product had all of the data from the
destination product except the product name and SKU.

Problem 1. Is the product a subproduct of one using template A? When
pages are being generated the first time a product is encountered,
(either as the product by its self or as a subproduct) the more info
page will be generated using the product moreinfo template in effect at
that time. So if the product is a subproduct of another product that is
probably the template that is being used. Generation keeps track of
moreinfo pages generated so that they are only done once per generation
and not each time the product is encountered.
Problem 2. I have not been able to reproduce this problem and we have
had no other reports of this happening. How frequently does it seem to
occur? Can you give exact steps that make it happen? (using the steps
below it didn't happen for me.)

Hi, Jim,

This is not a subproduct of anything, nor is there a subproduct defined. I
have deleted the more info pages, changed the name of the more info page in
the product screen, changed the template and it and SS still generates a
more info page to the wrong template.

Out of the first 10 products I entered, 7 of them exhibited this behavior. I
cannot recreate it. I am starting to believe that with the first problem
(the templates) and the second problem, that somehow my database has
corrupted. This is a brand new shopsite install.

It may be that the database are corrupt.
I suggest you escalate this to your website host and have them contact
ShopSite support if they need additional help in solving the problem. If
your host doesn't provide support you can purchase single insident or
yearly support from ShopSite at http://www.shopsite.com/support_pricing.html

The hosting service fixed the problem.

Though I am curious about a statement they made: "

When a More Info Page is generated for a subproduct, the product template
that is open at that time and used for the More Info Page is the template of
the parent product. You cannot designate different more info pages for
different products? Whichever one is first in the database is how the
template is chosen? If I have a highback chair and a related low back chair,
the low back chair's more info page could be generated from the High Back
Chair, even though it is set to use it's own high back chair template?

This is a definite flaw in the genration process. Some products REQUIRE
different product templates. If I am selling a desk and a stapler, the
relevant details of the products would be different (no one needs to know
the dimensions of a stapler but they do for a desk) thus they would need a
different template.

Thanks!

Andy

Bug 2 first

Shopsite uses the Name and SKU for the unique identifier (key field) for
a product. If you copy a product, these fields must differ from the
original to avoid duplicate entries in the database. I usually put a
"-1" on the sku to distinguish the two products.

Bug 1.

Had the same thing. Spent all Sunday running it down. I don't know
what caused it, but finally got rid of it (after many bad words) by
doing the following:

Download product database to local disk

Delete from the shopsite site all affected products (most important step)

Remove all affected product assignments from any pages that have them.

Regenerate the site with utilities/publish/regenerate

Assign the correct page templates to any pages to be changed.

Look in the downloaded database (I use MS Access) and remove any
template assignments from the affected products.

Upload the affected products from your local disk

Regenerate the site with utilities/publish/regenerate (again)

Use product global edit to assign the product template from the product.

Re-establish all product assignments to pages.

Regenerate the site with utilities/publish/regenerate (last time-I promise)

At this point, I was back in business, without any sign of problems.

Until next time.

Good luck!

(I imagine that you have found out the hard way that you have to
regenerate after every template modification. The "Publish" tab on
backoffice doesn't pick up template mods.)

Good luck

I gave them unique names and skus when it asked for the names, in fact
Shopsite (at least this version) won't let you copy the page if any of these
fields are the same. I like you -1 idea though.

Yeah, I always do a manual regenerate. Worked with Shopsite for 4-5 years.
Your suggestion sounds like a good way to verify the database data and make
sure it's clean.

Thanks so much!!!
