Confirm Email Address

Postby Larry Bohen » Mon Apr 25, 2005 6:07 am

We continue to get orders with incorrect email addresses. Incorrect email
addresses cause:

1) an automatic order confirmation not to be received by the customer
2) manual research by us to try to determine the correct email address
3) manual email order confirmation by us if the correct address can be
determined
4) probable telephone contact if we have to discuss the order with the
customer

Does ShopSite Pro 7 have a feature that requires the customer to confirm
(enter) their email address after entering it the first time?

If not, why not?

ShopSite Pro 7 does not have a confirm email address feature (unless you
force your customers to register with you). The easiest solution would be to
create a custom checkout field and then add your own JavaScript to check the
two fields, which is what I did.

The only downside to that is the custom checkout field can't be placed
underneath the Email field. You have to place above the regular checkout
fields or the below them. For example, if you place the custom checkout
field below the regular checkout fields the customer will enter in their
email address and the towards the bottom of the web page they have to enter
in the email address again, which in my opinion is a little unprofessional.
Most web forms that have you confirm your email address will place both
email fields next to each other.

Thanks for your input Adam. This is a feature that should be part of
ShopSite. I would think the feature would simply ask the customer to confirm
(enter again) their email address after which ShopSite would compare the
two. If they are the same, the customer is allowed to proceed. If they are
different the customer is asked to re-enter both.

As Adam mentioned there is not a "confirm email address" option in

ShopSite 7. As far as I know there has been few if any request for this
feature in all previous version of ShopSite.

If you enable customer registration you can require the shopper to enter
the email address twice when creating their account. Then when they
login their email address will be automatically used to fill in the
email address on the billing screen. Also as Adam mentioned you could
use the "custom checkout fields" and some javascript to create your own
email address field and have the two values compared and if necessary
have the customer enter the email address again. You can also enable a
confirmation screen between the billing and thankyou screens. If you
have the confirmation screen enabled the shopper will see the email
address there and have a chance to go back and change it if necessary.

I personally dislike having to enter information twice on a website. I
can mistype something twice in a row pretty easy ;-) so even having to
enter it twice is no guarantee that the shopper would get it right.

How important is it to you? How many others think that this is an
important issue?

I don't see many sites in my online shopping that make me enter my e-mail
twice.....password, yes.

Although not exactly the feature I want, I just added a Custom Field asking
the customer to re-enter their email address. The second email address
entered will not check against the first, but this may help cut down on
incorrect email addresses, particularly those caused by typos. If the
customer doesn't remember their email address correctly, they will likely
enter the same incorrect email address twice.

New functionality was added to ShopSite 7.1 to allow the merchant to add
validation of custom fields on the shopping cart screens to the built
in CheckIt function. The field for entering this information is called
"Javascript added at start of built-in CheckIt function:" and can be
found under Commerce Setup > Order System, (Shopping cart | Checkout |
Confirmation) You could probably add some javascript to this field to
compare the email address entered in the ShopSite field to the email
address in your field and if they aren't the same have the popup dialog
saying the addresses aren't the same and require them to be the same.

Hi Larry,

Here's some javascript I wrote to check two fields to make sure they have
the same information:

if (document.billing.field01.value != document.billing.Email.value)
error += "Entered email addresses did not match" + "\n";

Where "field01" and "Email" are the names of the two fields you want to
compare.
