PayPal echeck order delay

Postby Dana Jeffries » Sat Jul 02, 2005 1:47 pm

When a customer places an order using an eCheck from PayPal we don't receive an
order confirmation until the eCheck clears.

I receive a PayPal eCheck notice so I know the customer has ordered an item but
I have no way of knowing what they've ordered.

If the customer is ordering a one of a kind or a low inventory item it's
possible for that item to be sold or sold out of before I receive the order
confirmation.

I don't see this as different from credit card processing. The order hasn't
been paid, just approved. The customer has started payment but it hasn't been
finalized.

We should receive the order confirmation, at least a copy of what is sent to
the customer, so we know what they've ordered.

A check (or eCheck) is nothing like a credit card approval. With a
credit card, the funds have been verified and are on hold on the
customers card pending settlement. With an eCheck, you have no idea if
the funds are even valid until it clears.

Loren,

I do agree that there is a difference in whether the money is "there" and I
won't go into credit card chargebacks. I'm sorry to have muddled the basic
issue.

The real point is to have some way of knowing what the customer has ordered so
that it may be set aside.

As I said, an email message of the order confirmation would at least let us
know what need to be set aside.

Thanks,
