Catergorizing/subcatergorizing pages?

Postby Nippon Racing » Tue Aug 16, 2005 4:04 pm

Does anyone know of a way to catergorize and subcatergorize pages? As of
now, we have about 10,000 pages. As you can imagine, when we load a product
in shopsite, it takes about 10 full seconds for that page to load while all
of the pages are listed. What I would like to do is to be able to put all
of those pages in specific catergories; probably about 90 catergories total.
From there I'd have about 75 subcatergories within each of the original 90,
which would list the actual product pages.

We have to add about 20,000 products, and this simple option would save us
an enormous amount of time.

Thanks for any input, I appreciate it!

Jeff,

There isn't any way currently to subcategorize pages so that when you
add products you only see a certain list that you could then drill down
through.

However in v7.1 (seems you are currently using v7.0) a change was made
to the way pages are selected to assign a product to from the Add
Product and Edit Product Info menus. Instead of listing the full list of
pages in these menus, there is a Select button which when clicked will
open a new pop-up window with two select boxes in it, one with the list
of pages the product is not assigned to and the other with the list of
pages it is assigned to, and you can select pages in either list and
move them back and forth between the lists by clicking a button.

While this does not specifically address the issue of having all pages
listed, it does make it so that you don't have to wait for the whole
list of pages to load when all you want to do is edit a product name,
price, sku, etc. It is also an easier visualization to see the pages
assigned/not-assigned in separate boxes instead of having to hunt
through the entire list to see which pages checkboxes are checked, as
you do now in v7.0 and earlier.

Another thing to do to make the selection of pages to assign the product
to easier is to name your page names in such a way that related pages
group together in the list. For example, if I had multiple levels of
'category' pages, then I might name them like this:

Books
Books > Fiction
Books > Non-fiction
Books > Non-Fiction > Cooking
Toys
Toys > Balls
Toys > Balls > Small
Toys > Balls > Large
Toys > Dolls
Toys > Dolls > Barbie
Toys > Dolls > Ken
Toys > Specials

etc. The lists of pages in the pop-up should be sorted alphabetically,
so grouping your pages like this will make it easier to find the pages
you want to assign a particular product to.
