International Sales?

Postby kory@dancedepot.com » Wed Aug 24, 2005 5:38 am

I was curious to hear of any experiences with international sales? Who out
there is selling internationally? What are the pitfalls? As a new store, we
are not yet selling internationally, and my credit card merchant warns me
against it, yet it's such an appealing potential market.

Are international sales something you'd recommend/discourage? Why?

Thanks!

Not for beginners. You'll get hit with huge orders...from Nigeria and
Indonesia immediately. None will
be good. There are big terriffs on apparel and footwear. Note that many of
the biggest websites (Wal-Mart.com)
don't export even to Canada. At best, its far more work.

We used to ship to several countries, but due to customs problems and fraud,
we stopped shipping outside of the USA. We tried Canada again for awhile,
but Canadian customs is very slow and its not worth the hassle to us.

We, Audiobooks Online, have been selling internationally for several years
and will continue. About 15% of our sales are outside the USA.

We ship by the United States Postal System, which transfers our shipments in
the destination country to a "local" delivery agent, usually part of the
countries postal system.

We have not had any Customs problems, except that delivery periods cannot be
predicted as well because Customs may hold a shipment up.

Yes, credit card fraud is an exposure, but we have become quite good at
spotting it. We err on the side of caution and likely loose some sales. The
thieves, primarily in Nigeria, but in other countries as well, are getting
increasingly sophisticated in obtaining billing address, telephone numbers
and even CVV codes.

Other than fraudulent orders from Nigeria, our valid sales are to the UK and
Australia.

We have noticed that, international customers are less likely, than our USA
customers, to report a defective audiobook.

One pitfall, that can affect the international customer is the addition of
Customs duty or a Value-added Tax to their purchase. We don't collect these
funds, but it can make their purchase experience with us less positive.
These additional charges are not always added, in fact, most of the time
they seem not to be added, but it can be an aggravation to the customer. We
once had a customer in the UK refuse the shipment because of the additional
charges.
