Credit Card Policies

Postby kory@dancedepot.com » Sat Aug 27, 2005 7:29 pm

I was curious to know what everyone's thoughts/practices are on credit card
authorization policies as it pertains to billing addresses. I use
authorize.net for transaction approvals, and require that the billing zip
code be a match to approve the sale, but do not require that the billing
street address be a match. Authorize.net does tell me if the street address
matches or not, but even if they don't match they will still approve the
sale (assuming the billing zip code matches).

For most of my sales, the two parameters do match, but I have had a couple
recently for which the billing street address didn't match. I plan to call
authorize.net to get their input on this, but wanted to also here from other
ShopSite users.

I know the goal of fraud protection is important, but I also don't want to
be too restrictive and risk potential sales from valid customers. Lots of
people have different billing/shipping addresses, and shopping carts can be
confusing enough.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

For me, it depends on the product, and how the product will be shipped.
If I was selling a real, physical, product and not something virtual;
if I was able ship insured; if I could require a signature before
delivery, then, sure, I would be OK with the billing address being less
than perfect.

The issue really isn't the credit card details. The issue is, "How easy
can you get your product back if the payment goes bad?" After all, the
credit card details can be perfect, but the buyer turns around and
disputes the sale anyway.

We use Authorize.net also and have it set the way you do. We have it set to
reject if the billing zip does not match, but let it thru if the street does
NOT match but the zip DOES match. There are too many variations to a street
address. And as you point out, the shopping cart is confusing enough.

We have had it set this way for a couple of years and have never had a fraud
problem.
