ordering options (with different weights)

Postby Don Lundell » Tue Sep 27, 2005 11:48 am

I'm using ordering options for a couple of products where the items have
quite different weights. is it possible to configure it such that the different
weights of the items are used to calculate shipping?

If it's not possible, seems like it would be easy to use a third field in ordering
options as an add-on to the shipping weight (the way it adds the second field to
the price).

Thanks,

It is currently not possible to have different weights for order option
items.

.... "seems like it would be easy"... 'easy' is a relative term. From
the user perspective everything should be easy to do. From the
development side thing are more difficult since there could be lots of
ramifications. Changes to order options would require changes to the
products cgis, shopping cart cgis, orderhandling, downloading orders,
downloading/uploading products, possibly generation and probably
additional cgis just to make an "easy" change. ;-)

I'm sure there might be numerous changes under the covers.

I guess my options are to split the difference (which works ok in the case of
lightweight items, less well in the case of items that vary quite a bit in weight),
or to have separate add-to-cart buttons for the items instead of using ordering
options.

I'll submit a feature request and perhaps they'll add it in a future release.

We also could make very good use of a weight field.

We sell beer and wine, and we sell it by the bottle, six-pack and case.
They are the exact same product, but the weights are very different. As it
is now, we need different products for each, but if the options had the
ability to add a weight this feature would be much more functional.

I will also add a request for this in future releases.
