Another Lexiconn question

Postby Gary » Wed Oct 19, 2005 11:31 am

We have used Lexiconn for a couple of years without a glitch. Since they
moved from Chicago to Conneticut on October 10 our site has been operating
very slowly. I have run tjping and it doesn't show there to be a problem,
but we have had customers complain and our access through 2 different ISPs
is consistently slow.

Has anyone else who's server was moved noticed slower page loading times?

Since the tjping data is OK, Lexiconn doesn't see a problem.

If anyone wants to click on our site and let me know if it seems slow (I
know that your response will be qualitative since you probably haven't been
to our site, but your opinion would still be helpful to us) I would
appreciate it.

Thanks

Maybe the problem with the router which failed was causing some of the
delay.?

They're having serious issues at the new datacenter too. They promised
that once the IP's resolved to the new DC, everything would go back to
normal then today without warning our site went down again.

I've always heard such good things about Lexiconn from everyone on the
boards for the past 5 years, so when we were looking for a ShopSite host
we chose them. I can't believe two DAYS of downtime in a month is
acceptable to anyone. I know these types of outages aren't common, but
if the Googlebot hits us during them we'll be dropped from the SE's -
our main source of traffic!

I don't know what to do... I know the outage is temporary (hopefully)
but still the end of the 2nd day of almost complete downtime and I'm
starting to wonder if they'll get it back up and running at all. We
don't have a huge site with them, but we're still losing thousands of
dollars in sales being dead in the water like this.

Seems they are still having internal routing issues in the new datacenter.

The way I read the problem, they were basically forced to go live with a network
configuration that they were planning on testing and tweaking for 2 more weeks
or so.

Its been brutal for us, too, but we're trying to be patient as Lexiconn has
always been very good to us.

Is that true about the Googlebot? One missed spider and you're dropped?

Meanwhile, does anyone know the process for setting up a MIRROR site that would
automatically take over in the event of an issue like this?

FYI, we've been functional for most of the day but extremely sluggish.

Sincerely,

Chris

I've noticed a bit of sluggishness with most sites today, perhaps
because a lot of stuff was knocked offline down in Florida because of
Wilma. Internet routes that would normally have gone through routers
down there have to get re-routed elsewhere.

We were down one day last week as many others were due to a Chicago router
issue which has been fixed. We were also down another day due to a
(coincidental) hard drive and SCSI card issue on our server at Lexiconn.

I understand from Lexiconn that a mirrored site is possible, however would
incur extra costs. I didn't pursue it further.

We also have been experiencing some sluggishness today, but our site has
been up.

Lexiconn has been an outstanding host for us for several years and we don't
plan on moving our site for a couple of days downtime. If that happened
every year, I would certainly take a close look at alternatives. I doubt you
could find a host that is as responsive, knowledgeable of ShopSite and
(until last week) had an incredible uptime stats.

Re: Lexiconn/ Googlebot

Postby Chris » Tue Oct 25, 2005 6:49 am

Lexiconn has always been superb for us as well and if anyone deserves a chance,
I feel its them. Even in the midst of this problem, they responded promptly to
my e-mail and addressed even the concerns posted here in this newgroup regarding
the Googlebot. FYI, they say, "To address your concern about Google, google
will not drop a site from its index if a site is down during a googlebot visit.
At worst, you may see a 1 day drop in rank, but as soon as the googlebot sees
your pages back, they go right back to where they were before. For a site to
drop from Google, it must be down for about a month, or the time between one
deep crawl to the next."

We may look into a mirrored site (with their assistance) as a safety net in the
event of unforseen problems in the future (as nothing is 100%), but unless these
problems persist for an extended period, I don't think its fair to write
Lexiconn off.

Sincerely,

Chris
