International Sales

Postby kory@dancedepot.com » Mon Oct 24, 2005 6:32 am

After speaking with various people we have, as of yet, not shipped
internationally. I don't have plans to add international sales to our public
website, but I am getting email inquiries from international customers
asking if we will sell to them.

I'm wondering if there are suggested screening techniques or recommended
policies regarding these inquiries. I guess I'm envisioning a scenario
whereby we'd have a list of steps to follow for international orders,
including calling the customer's credit card company, etc., that we'd
complete before shipping internationally.

Any suggestions are welcome. I'm aware of the risk of fraud and some obvious
indicators, but I'm sure there is a lot of legitimate business we can gain
if we're careful. As an example I have a $500 order in front of me from a
ballet school in Japan. They have a website, and have provided me with their
CVV2 code as well as phone numbers for their credit card company. I'm not
sure how I should proceed.

Thanks in advance,

Kory

Bottom line - you will be on the hook for 100% of the amount if an
international customer performs a chargeback. You have no recourse. If you
want to ship internationally, and you want to be sure your payment is solid,
require payment via a wire transfer or international money order.

We ship internationally every day. For repeat customers and small orders, we
accept credit cards or PayPal on these transactions. For new customers or
large $ transactions, we require a wire transfer or international money
order.

This system has worked very well for us, and international sales make up a
significant portion of our overall sales.
