Database updates and uploads

Postby bbailey » Sat Oct 29, 2005 6:15 pm

Hi!

New to shopsite. New to Databases. Downloaded "products" database,
and would love to add multiple (only 100 or so) products for upload.

Is there a great page or resource that will acquant me with the
essentials for understanding these databases?

All the Best,
Bret

There is pretty extensive help on line for every page in the ShopSite

back office interface. If you go to the Utilities > Database screen and
click on the ? icon it will take you to help for the databases. The url
will be different for each version of ShopSite but it should be
something like:
http://shopsite.com/help/8.0/en-US/sc/p ... mmary.html

You will find a description of all of the fields available in the
upload/download file, what values they can contain, etc. The easiest
file format to work with is tab delimited which is what ShopSite will
download and which can be imported to most database and spreadsheet
programs. You do not have to include all fields in your upload file only
those that are important for you the others will receive the default
values. The biggest things to watch for are problems that can be
introduced by the application you edit your file in outside of ShopSite.
Be aware that some applications such as Excel may put quotes around
the text when it is saved which may not be what you want. You can get
around this issue by selecting the block of data in the file, copying it
to notepad or wordpad and saving it from there. Excel also stops saving
the required tabs for data if cells at the end of a row of data are
blank. This will cause an error that the number of tabs don't match
when you try to upload the file. To get around this issue make sure
that the last column in your file always has something in every row. I
usually include a dummy column after the last column of data and insert
some kind of text in every row.
