Firefox Compatability Complaints

Postby Jay Guliano » Fri Nov 18, 2005 1:13 pm

We have been getting phone calls from clients recently that have gone to
FIrefox for their browser. They all have the same complaint that they can
not get items into the shopping cart and if they do they can not get through
the checkout page. Is there a known issue with Shop Site and Firefox or is
it just my site? Our pages are all canned templates from Shop Site so it is
not a custom page issue.

Firefox is my primary browser and our site works fine with it (with Firefox
version .9PRE through 1.5 RC1).

15% of the visitors to our Web store use FireFox and we have never had any
feedback that someone had trouble placing an order (or couldn't at all) that
was thought to be related to FireFox.

Jay,

I went to your site in Firefox, and had no issues putting items in the cart,
or getting to the checkout page. I did not try and complete an order, but
the site looks fine from what I can tell. Maybe some of your customers are
blocking cookies and trying to register / sign-in, which would not work if
cookies are disabled / blocked.

I just downloaded and installed Firefox and ran a complete purchase through
as a test. It worked perfectly for me as well. The odd thing is when I told
those people to try it with Explorer they did and it worked perfectly for
them. If your theory is correct they have different security settings in
Firefox than Explorer?

Yes, they can have different security settings, which may explain the
problem they were having with only Firefox.

Most of the ShopSite engineers use Firefox so they would be aware if
there were issues and would fix them.

There is a bug with Mozilla and probably Firefox too that if an image is
not found it displays the image name and not a broken image like IE
does. When this happens you can't click on the image name and have the
expected action occur like it does if you click on the broken image icon
in IE. I logged a bug on this for Mozilla about 2 years ago and they
were debating how to fix it but I haven't see it in the live code yet.

Use of Firefox by our customers --mostly lo-tech types-- has risen from 3%
in March to 7% now. Two weeks ago I checked every page on our site and the
cart for
compatibility and found only a few cosmetic issues.

Note that there is a free Web Developer Extension for FF that can be
downloaded from
the Mozilla site.
