US Postal Service Shipping Rates

Postby kory@dancedepot.com » Tue Nov 29, 2005 12:47 pm

We currently offer only UPS shipping rates as the shipping options on our
store. We have daily UPS pickup, and having the rates integrated into our
checkout can't be more convenient.

However, I'd like to figure out if it's possible to also integrate USPS
rates as well. We've had some customers with only P.O. Boxes to ship to
(which UPS can't do), some customers request USPS because it's cheaper, and
for international shipping UPS is very expensive while USPS is fairly
affordable.

So, what are the suggestions to offer UPS as we currently do but also offer
USPS as well? Is there a way to integrate USPS rates, or would I have to use
an alternative calculation method such as by total price or weight?

Thanks in advance,

Kory

If you have ShopSite Pro which has the Custom Shipping Add-on api, you
could purchase the USPS (and/or FedEx) shipping module available from
Lexiconn, see http://www.shopsite.com/partners-tools.html.

Heck, consider using fixed rate shipping. We do and it works fine.
We charge $8.50 per order no matter how big or how small.
Amounts to a discount on very large orders and a penalty to
discourage tiny ones

I presume you take a lot of phone orders. A fixed rate makes it
easy to tell the customer the shipping cost.

Once or twice a year someone will complain that $8.50 is
outrageous for a $10 order, which it is of course. We cater to large
buyers.

We ship by UPS or USPS at our option. Yes, some customers
prefer one or the other and we abide by that. USPS is much cheaper
to Alaska and Hawaii. You can ship on Saturday with the post office.
I think the mail is really quite good these days.

We use the Lexiconn USPS module and it works great. We only use USPS for
International orders since it's so much cheaper, and use UPS for domestic.
