Credit Card Fees

Postby Jay Guliano » Thu Mar 16, 2006 4:39 pm

We are using VeriSign for our credit card processing along with The Bank Of
Beverly Hills for our merchant account. Has anyone had any success in
reducing their credit card fees charged by the various vendors handling the
transactions that flow through their site?

If you are a Costco premium member, we've found that their credit card
processing program offers significantly cheaper rates.

One to look at.

You might also look into the PayPal WebSite Payments Pro added to

ShopSite in version 8.0. It allows you to take credit cards on your
site and the shopper never knows they are being processed by PayPal.
Here is a link to the ShopSite help about the feature:

and here is a link to PayPal's information

and here is info about fees

What is the advantage of using PayPal over using VeriSign and my merchant
account? I thought PayPal was really intended for small vendors that do not
have a merchant account to get paid through.

We are paying 2.35% plus 30 cents per transaction for Visa MasterCard and 30
cents per transaction for AMEX and Discover. On top of that we pay a $10
monthly fee. AMEX and Discover both charge discount fees themselves which
are additional.

It is probably easier to get setup with PayPal than with a company like
VeriSign. I think that PayPal/eBay bought out one of the major credit
card gateways last year so they are in for the long haul on this. On
there site they mention their various rates and they have a rate for
companies doing over $100,000 per month so they must have some big
customers.

Many payment gateways have high monthly fees in addition to taking a
percent of the transaction and a per transaction fee. They may also
have statement fees, etc. which all add up for a small company that
doesn't do a lot of business but wouldn't amount to much for large
firms. With PayPal you don't have a lot of add on fees.
