Serial number add-on

I have a customer looking to embed a unique serial number into a zip file
before the digital download would take place.
I know it's a long shot, but I'm interested in knowing if such a plug-in or
API exists already or if we need to code it.
Basically the serial number is based on customer name/address and generated
as a text file included in the Digital Download.
Has anyone done this with ShopSite or have a direction I could go in?
