State/Province List

Postby Larry Bohen » Tue May 04, 2004 3:33 pm

In the State/Province section, of our ShopSite Pro store, is this choice:
Select One;n
Outside US and Canada;FOREIGN

If the customer selects it, the word FOREIGN shows up in their ShopSite and
Order Manager orders. Each such occurence has to be manually edited (in
Order Manager) to remove the word FOREIGN.

Can the State/Province information be blank?

I'd like to not have anything appear in the State/Province area if the
customer is outside the US/Canada.

"Outside US and Canada;FOREIGN" is not a default ShopSite option, so it
was added by someone else. The semi-colon and everything after that is
not required, so just try removing the ;FOREIGN from the end of that
option (in Commerce Setup -> State and Country).

No, the state pull-down cannot be circumvented depending on country
selected, I would imagine that this is why the "Outside US and Canada"
option was added by someone in the first place.

I removed the :FOREIGN portion so the statement is now:

Select One;n
Outside US and Canada

I placed a test order and now the phrase "Outside US and Canada" shows up in
the State/Province field of the ShopSite and Order Manager orders.

Did I misunderstand your advice below or is this the way it is supposed to
work?

That is the way it is supposed to be. If that is the option that you
have placed in the list in the configuration for the state pull-down,
that is what will display in the pull-down in the shopping cart.

As I understand it, the text BEFORE the ; is the option text. The text AFTER the
semicolon is its value. If there is no semicolon, then the value defaults to the
option text. Perhaps you could try leaving the semicolon in and putting a blank
space after it.

I added the semicolon with a space after it and "Outside US and Canada"
still shows up in ShopSite and Order Manager orders.

I suppose I could have some character after the semicolon but this would
also show up in ShopSite and Order Manager orders and would have to be
manually removed from the address.

Any other thoughts?

Larry,

You could always turn off the use of the state pull-down (switch it back
to a text entry field), and in v7 you can make this text field not
required by unchecking a box in Commerce Setup -> Order System ->
Shipping. This way people without a state can just leave the text field
blank, and nothing will be in your receipts for that field.
