Taxjar and Wholesale Accounts

Heads up on Taxjar

We set up taxjar to collect taxes on our wholesale site. Many of customers are marked as tax exempt. However, taxjar has no way to know this so they report the sale is taxed in their system thus essentially showing every sale in your taxjar account as taxed. For example if I have a customer that is tax exempt with an order of $100, in the taxjar report it shows taxes due to the state. This is impossible to fix when you have thousands of orders. If tax collection is important to you I recommend looking at other shopping cart providers and or other tax systems.

Also we are getting many errors in the checkout process that will not allow customers to checkout due to a problem with the way shopsite and taxjar communicate with one another.

We are sorry to hear that you are having problems. This is the first that we are aware of issues and have asked your host to get further information. We'd specifically like more details regarding:

"Also we are getting many errors in the checkout process that will not allow customers to checkout due to a problem with the way shopsite and taxjar communicate with one another."

As for exempt customers not being charged tax at checkout but being marked as taxed in TaxJar, we may have found an additional code that we can send to TaxJar to resolve this problem.

If I remember correctly we were getting error 400. I disabled the service as it was hurting our business so I am unable to get the exact message but it was a long message

Could you go to Commerce > Merchant Alerts and see if there is any more information from when the problem last occurred?

Thanks, can you get the rest of the alert information such as the products that were in the cart and the shoppers address? You can private message me that info.

David per your quote above do we have the abllity to setup our Shopsite cart for exempt (resellers) customers to not be charged sales tax in the cart if using Taxjar?

We currently use Taxjar for one State. We have many customers who resale our products and have a resale license for their state. With the new sales tax ruling, the ability for a reseller to check a box as a reseller and not be charged tax on the order would solve a big problem. Resellers could then order online.

We have made a modification to the code that we send to TaxJar for exempt orders that should resolve the issue you were seeing. We have a pre-release version that we can make available to your host should you desire to try it out. Regarding the 400 error, we believe there were communication issues with the TaxJar server that caused it. We have not been able to duplicate that error since you reported it.
