Sales Tax Collection Anomaly

Postby Swine » Tue Feb 19, 2019 7:09 am

We have set up ShopSite to collect sales tax in state that have a straight sales tax percentage.

But we have been seeing some odd behavior where some zip codes in states we're collecting tax simply do not add it it. I even lists the total "taxable amount" but then under "Tax Total" it says "no tax".

Thoughts on this?

Actually, after working fairly well initially, ShopSite now only appears to be collecting tax in three of the 20 states I've selected.

Use zip code to determine sales tax.

In the Tax by Zip configuration if you have the 'Apply tax to selected countries' checkbox checked make sure you actually have United States selected to be taxed. If it says 'No Countries Selected', then it won't work.

Besides enabling the 'Use?' checkbox for a state you want to tax, make sure you have also put a rate in the 'Tax Rate' box. And vice versa.

When testing make sure you are using Taxable products. The tax settings should have no effect if all products in the cart have the Taxable checkbox unchecked.

Also when testing, use the Empty Cart function and add items to the cart anew AFTER making any changes to make sure there aren't elements of the old settings in that cart file.

Thanks for the input. Problem solved.

One of the zip codes did not collect tax because there were too many question marks in the zip, as in 532???, so it was looking for a 6-digit zip code. The other zip that did not add sales tax was because the customer put in their +4 zip code, but without a dash between the 5 and the +4.
